El rhythm and blues (abreviado por sus siglas R&B) o jumping music es un género musical derivado en su origen del jazz, el gospel y el blues. El término musical fue introducido en Estados Unidos en 1949 por Jerry Wexler de la revista Billboard. Sustituyó al término conocido como "race records" (grabaciones de raza), considerado ofensivo para la posguerra mundial así como para la categoría de Billboard "Harlem Hit Parade" en junio de 1949, y principalmente era usado para identificar el género musical que más tarde se desarrollaría en forma de rock and roll.
Charles Kent Wilson nació el 29 de Enero de 1953 en Tulsa, Oklahoma. Más conocido como Charlie Wilson, es un cantante americano de R&B y soul, además de ser el vocalista líder de "Gap Band".
El creció en su ciudad natal, comenzando a los 4 años a cantar en el coro de la iglesia. Eso le mostró el camino para continuar una carrera musical en el coro de la escuela, posteriormente formando Gap y actualmente en solitario.
