Rock en español es la música rock compuesta e interpretada en castellano. A diferencia del rock en inglés, el rock en español ha logrado tener éxito mundial en pocas ocasiones, y muchas veces ni siquiera entre países de habla hispana. Por eso el rock en castellano se ha desarrollado de manera heterogénea en las distintas naciones hispanohablantes; quedando así la música de muchas bandas para uso casi exclusivamente nacional hasta la llegada de la globalización de contenidos multimedia acentuada por la generalización de internet y desarrollada especialmente en el siglo XXI.
Treinta años después de lanzar su primer single (500 copias del hit balear, ‘Mother Earth’/‘The Hump’), Rick Smith y Karl Hyde todavía disfrutan del éxito iniciado en aquel entonces.
Hyde y Smith se conocieron en 1981 en el Art Collage de Cardiff, en Gran Bretaña. Desde entonces participaron en diferentes proyectos juntos. Freur fue su primera banda new wave, la cual llegó a ser soporte de Eurythmics en 1990, justo antes de separarse. Luego hubo un período de proyectos individuales: Hyde colaborando con artistas como Debbie Harry y Prince; Smith, con el célebre Bob Geldof. En 1988 se reúnen nuevamente, esta vez bajo el nombre de UNDERWORLD.
