Rock en español es la música rock compuesta e interpretada en castellano. A diferencia del rock en inglés, el rock en español ha logrado tener éxito mundial en pocas ocasiones, y muchas veces ni siquiera entre países de habla hispana. Por eso el rock en castellano se ha desarrollado de manera heterogénea en las distintas naciones hispanohablantes; quedando así la música de muchas bandas para uso casi exclusivamente nacional hasta la llegada de la globalización de contenidos multimedia acentuada por la generalización de internet y desarrollada especialmente en el siglo XXI.
Tristania es uno de los mejores exponentes de Gothic Metal procedente de Noruega (para ser más exactos de una pequeña ciudad de la costa suroeste, llamada Stavanger). Se formó en 1996 por tres amigos Einar Moen (teclados), Kenneth Olsson (baterista), Morten Veland (guitarrista y voz) y luego se integro a la banda Vibeke Stene (Voz femenina).
Nace casi de la mano de otras agrupaciones vecinas y contemporáneas, tales como Theatre of Tragedy y The Sins Of Thy Beloved en un concepto muy similar, aunque luego cada uno desarrollaría un estilo particular y característico por sus propios medios. Poco después y luego de buscar músicos en su ciudad, incorporaron a Rune Østerhus (bajista) y Anders Høyvik Hidle (primera guitarra) para completar la agrupación noruega.
