El reggae es un género musical originario de la isla de Jamaica, inspirado en otros dos géneros antecesores: el ska y el rocksteady, y cuya primera aparición se remonta hacia los finales de la década del sesenta del siglo pasado. Robert Nesta Marley (Nine Miles, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, 6 de febrero de 1945 - Miami, 11 de mayo de 1981), mejor conocido como Bob Marley, fue un músico y compositor jamaicano. Durante su carrera musical fue el líder, compositor y guitarrista de las bandas de ska, rocksteady y reggae The Wailers (1964–1974) y Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974–1981). Entre los mayores éxitos de Bob Marley se encuentran "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Stir It Up", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", "One Love" y, junto a The Wailers, "Three Little Birds", así como los lanzamientos póstumos "Buffalo Soldier" y "Iron Lion Zion". El álbum recopilatorio Legend, lanzado en 1984, tres años después de su muerte, es el álbum de reggae más vendido de la historia con 10 discos de platino en los Estados Unidosy 20 millones de copias en todo el mundo
Logró convertir al reggae en un ritmo ahora conocido mundialmente y mediante éste transmitir su mensaje de paz, conciencia, amor, protesta e idolatría al "Emperador Haile Selassie I" (nacido Taffari Makonnen, que llevaba el título hereditario Ras), un sangriento dictador etíope que se decía descendiente de la cadena real del Rey Salomón. Marley pertenecía a los seguidores del predicador Marcus Garvey, cuya doctrina alentaba a la raza negra a tomar conciencia de sus vidas, buscar un estado de paz superior y unirse para un éxodo futuro a Zion (Etiopía, África). Desde la asunción de Haile Selasie al trono etíope, en 1930, muchos lo identificaron con el "Cristo Rey negro" del que hablaba Garvey, formándose el movimiento místico-religioso que tomó el nombre de "rastafari".
