La palabra poesía proviene del término latino poēsis, que a su vez deriva de un concepto griego. Se trata de la manifestación de la belleza o del sentimiento estético a través de la palabra, ya sea en verso o en prosa. De todas formas, su uso más usual se refiere a los poemas y composiciones en verso. Aunque es difícil establecer el origen de la poesía, se han hallado inscripciones jeroglíficas egipcias del año 2.600 A.C., que se consideran la primera manifestación poética de la que se tenga registro.
