El metal es un estilo de música basado en sonidos fuertes y poderosos que inspiran al que los oye, generalmente un sentimiento de enojo, ira, odio que usualmente son dirigidos hacia la sociedad donde vivimos, la vida diaria, el sistema político en algunos casos, en otros podemos encontrar temáticas que van desde religión, satanismo, muerte, sexo, violencia, soledad, melancolía. El metal tiene diversas formas y estilos, que van desde rápido pero no tan gutural, hasta el punto muy rápido y muy gutural. Los estilos son muy variados, y cada cual tiene sus ritmos, sonidos y temáticas respectivas.
The Damned Things es un grupo con base en Nueva York formado por Joe Trohman y Andy Hurley de Fall Out Boy, Keith Buckley y Josh Newton de Every Time I die y Scott Ian y Rob Caggiano de la mítica banda Anthrax.
Los inicios de la banda se dieron cuando Trohman conoce a Scott y juntos, empiezan a escribir música. Trohman sugiere a Andy Hurley que se una al proyecto para que escriba y ejecute las baterías; de momento, Hurley tuvo que pensarlo, pero, al ver que no estaría haciendo proyectos paralelos ni nada más que dedicándose a TDT, acepta el puesto. En un encuentro que tuvieron Trohman, Ian y Caggiano en un bar de su localidad, Scott dice en broma que Rob debería estar con ellos en la banda; Trohman y Caggiano se sorprenden: «¿Podrían haber tres guitarrras en una banda contemporanea?». Luego de ponerse de acuerdo, Caggiano también entra a la formación. Andy en el video introductorio de TDT habla de «Cantates soñados» y menciona que así es como Keith Buckley se hace con el proyecto, ya que su nombre fue el primero que surgió en una oportunidad, mientras él, Trohman y Scott practicaban. Newton entró de último, pues, Caggiano fue quién grabo las partes de bajo en el disco Ironiclast, y pues Keith, quién pertenece a ETID, lo llamó para que tocara en las presentaciones consiguientes a la grabación total del álbum debút. Luego es que Josh acepta estar en TDT como bajista tiempo-completo.
