El metal es un estilo de música basado en sonidos fuertes y poderosos que inspiran al que los oye, generalmente un sentimiento de enojo, ira, odio que usualmente son dirigidos hacia la sociedad donde vivimos, la vida diaria, el sistema político en algunos casos, en otros podemos encontrar temáticas que van desde religión, satanismo, muerte, sexo, violencia, soledad, melancolía. El metal tiene diversas formas y estilos, que van desde rápido pero no tan gutural, hasta el punto muy rápido y muy gutural. Los estilos son muy variados, y cada cual tiene sus ritmos, sonidos y temáticas respectivas.
Sonata Arctica es una banda de Power Metal proveniente de la ciudad de Kemi, Finlandia. La banda fue fundada bajo el nombre de Tricky Beans y en sus inicios tocaban canciones fuertemente influidas por el género rock and roll, las cuales no tenían mucho que ver con su actual estilo, el Power Metal. Al principio de su carrera, grabaron 3 demos que nunca fueron enviados a ningún sello discográfico - Friend 'till The End, Agre Pamppers y PeaceMaker..
En 1997 la banda pasó a llamarse Tricky Means, y desde ese momento hasta 1999 su estilo fue cambiando hasta hacerlo de manera drástica, enfatizando en las melodías de teclado y confiando en una línea claramente distinguible en el Bajo y la guitarra. El vocalista Tony Kakko desarrolló un estilo propio para cantar basado en el falsete y las voces de tenor.
