El metal es un estilo de música basado en sonidos fuertes y poderosos que inspiran al que los oye, generalmente un sentimiento de enojo, ira, odio que usualmente son dirigidos hacia la sociedad donde vivimos, la vida diaria, el sistema político en algunos casos, en otros podemos encontrar temáticas que van desde religión, satanismo, muerte, sexo, violencia, soledad, melancolía. El metal tiene diversas formas y estilos, que van desde rápido pero no tan gutural, hasta el punto muy rápido y muy gutural. Los estilos son muy variados, y cada cual tiene sus ritmos, sonidos y temáticas respectivas.
Nightwish es fundada en 1996 por el tecladista Tuomas Holopainen. Inicialmente tratando de crear música acústica, reclutó a la vocalista de ópera entrenada Tarja Turunen, pero pronto agregó instrumentación de enfocada hacia el metal con ayuda del guitarrista Emppo Vuorinen y el baterista Jukka Nevalainen. Las demos de Nightwish les dieron un contrato con el sello finlandés Spinefarm, que lanzó su álbum debut, "Angels Fall First", a fines de 1997 (apareció en el resto de Europa al año siguiente). El segundo album, "Oceanborn", apareció a fines de 1998, con la adición del bajista Sami Vänskä, e hizo de Nightwish un éxito general de buena fe en su tierra natal; el álbum llegó al Top Five finlandés y se desprendió tres singles en el Top Ten.
Nightwish realizó una gran gira por Europa, consolidando su éxito, y en 2000 grabó su tercer álbum, "Wishmaster". No solo encabezó las listas finlandesas, sino que también se convirtió en el primer álbum del grupo en ser lanzado en los EE. UU. (Por Century Media, que también reeditó sus álbumes anteriores en 2001). Posteriormente lanzaron su primer album en vivo "From Wishes to Eternity" en 2001 documentando un concierto de la banda en Tampere, seguido del EP "Over The Hills and Far Away" el mismo año. Lanzado en 2002, "Century Child" demostró ser un éxito masivo en Finlandia y en toda Europa, Marco Hietala estaba ahora en el bajo, reemplazando a Sami Vänskä, además de incorporar voces masculinas a la mezcla musical. "Once" de 2004 los vio ir un paso más allá y conquistar Europa. Número uno en Alemania y número uno en el Top 100 europeo, el éxito de "Once" fue producto de una banda en la cima de su juego tras años de duro trabajo. La banda decidió lanzar su segundo material en vivo "End of an Era" documentando el último concierto junto a Turunen en el Hartwall Areena en Helsinki.
