El metal es un estilo de música basado en sonidos fuertes y poderosos que inspiran al que los oye, generalmente un sentimiento de enojo, ira, odio que usualmente son dirigidos hacia la sociedad donde vivimos, la vida diaria, el sistema político en algunos casos, en otros podemos encontrar temáticas que van desde religión, satanismo, muerte, sexo, violencia, soledad, melancolía. El metal tiene diversas formas y estilos, que van desde rápido pero no tan gutural, hasta el punto muy rápido y muy gutural. Los estilos son muy variados, y cada cual tiene sus ritmos, sonidos y temáticas respectivas.
Hammerfall, formado en el año 1993 por el sueco Oscar Dronjak, es un grupo de power metal . Oscar Dronjak creo primero el grupo Desecratorque que posteriormente cambio el nombre a Ceremonial Oath con un estilo claramente Death Metal. En el año 1996 se dedica a tomar otro rumbo, de Heavy/Power Metal. Así surgió HammerFall. Contacto con su amigo Jesper Strömblad para el trabajo con las guitarras, el acepta pero continua en el grupo Crystal Age y los incipientes In Flames. Aparte de Jesper llegaron Niklas Sundin- guitarras y Mikael Stanne-voz, ambos integrantes de Dark Tranquillity, además de Johan Larsson. Los proyectos de los miembros de Hammerfall impedían que tuvieran el tiempo necesario de ensayo. Además en Suecia el estilo más popular era el death metal de Gotemburgo, cosa que les impedía participar en concursos de bandas de rock, como el "Rockslaget". Tiempo después, Niklas y Johan decidieron dedicarse a sus bandas y dejar HammerFall. Sus reemplazantes fueron Glenn Ljungström (In Flames) y Fredrik Larsson (Crystal Age). Cuando compitieron en el "Rockslaget" la banda interpreto Steel Meets Steel, además de HammerFall y el clásico de los daneses Pretty Maids "Red, Hot and Ready". Cuando consiguieron llegar a semifinales, en 1996, Hammerfall impactó con el famosísimo Steel Meets Steel, su nueva Unchained y el himno de himnos, Breaking the Law, de Judas Priest.
Pero el vocalista Mikael Stanne decidió dedicarse totalmente a "Dark Tranquillity" y de paso no participó en las finales del concurso. Se decidieron por Joacim Cans, que los impresiono en los ensayos, aun así la banda no logró llegar a la final pero dos de sus temas fueron grabados en videos, que fueron enviados a Roel van Reijmersdal, dueño del sello holandés "Vic Records", el cual quedó impresionado por la calidad de la banda, e inmediatamente firmaron un contrato para grabar.
