Es el Baile principal de los Andes peruanos. Hay muchas variantes que toman carácter propio según qué región y pasan a llamarse de otra forma: Tunantada, Huaylas, etc... Es de pareja suelta y ya existía con anterioridad a la conquista. Sin embargo cabe destacar la diferencia entre el Huayno mestizo actual y el Wayno indígena, que es probablemente más fiel al original. En Bolivia pasa a llamarse Huayño teniendo sus propias características diferentes.
