El hip hop es un género musical que incluye golpes rítmicos que acompañan a una voz principal que rapea. Este es un género musical muy popular y uno de los principales componentes de lo que es considerado como la cultura hip hop. Muchos espectáculos instrumentales en los que se presentan DJs sin apoyo vocal, también son abarcados bajo el género de la música hip hop. Esto se ha vuelto más popular dado que las técnicas de mezclado y sampleo (o muestreo) han madurado en los últimos años.
Die Antwoord es un banda de rap-rave originaria de Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica, integrada por Watkin Tudor Jones o mejor conocido como "Ninja" en la agrupación, Yolandi Visser y DJ Hi-Tek. El trío se autodefinió como una mezcla de diversas culturas y su nombre significa "La respuesta" en Afrikáans. Se formó en 2008 siendo su álbum debut, $O$, que fue distribuido de manera gratuita desde su sitio web. El año siguiente, el cinematógrafo sudafricano Rob Malpage dirigió junto a Watkin el video de su primer sencillo, "Enter the Ninja"
Watkin Tudor Jones, vocalista de Die Antwoord, formó parte de la escena del hip-hop sudafricano por muchos años, siendo líder de bandas como The Original Evergree, MaxNormal.TV y The Constructus Corporation. Conocido por personificar diferentes personajes en sus bandas, en Die Antwoord utiliza a "Ninja", un personaje agresivo y vulgar, muy diferente a los otros.
