Del latín gothicus, gótico es un adjetivo que hace referencia a aquello perteneciente o relativo a los godos. Este era un pueblo que se encontraba tras la frontera oriental del Imperio Romano y que formaba parte del grupo que los romanos denominaban como bárbaros. Este vocablo fue acuñado por el tratadista de Florencia, Vasari, quien en una biografía sobre pintores toscanos incluyó un apartado sobre el arte de la Edad Media.
Banda finlandesa , anteriormente llamada Mary-Ann nombre con el cual poseian un estilo hard rock . En 1999 cambian de estilo musical por el gothic metal y esto lo llevan a cambiar también el nombre de la banda.
