Del latín gothicus, gótico es un adjetivo que hace referencia a aquello perteneciente o relativo a los godos. Este era un pueblo que se encontraba tras la frontera oriental del Imperio Romano y que formaba parte del grupo que los romanos denominaban como bárbaros. Este vocablo fue acuñado por el tratadista de Florencia, Vasari, quien en una biografía sobre pintores toscanos incluyó un apartado sobre el arte de la Edad Media.
The 69 Eyes es una banda finlandesa de metal gótico. Se formaron en Helsinki a principio de la década de los 90's.
En sus primeros trabajos eran una banda glam, concretamente sleaze rock. A partir de Wasting The Dawn la banda fue encaminando su sonido al metal gótico o gothic metal, influenciada por el gothic rock de bandas como The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cult o The Mission y el sonido más metálico de Type o Negative, todo esto conjuntamente con su admiración por The Doors, Elvis Presley o Billy Idol. Erróneamente se le tiende a etiquetar a esta banda como gothic rock, si bien el estilo se acerca por el registro barítono de su vocalista Jyrki69, la voz no es suficiente para categorizarla como tal, sino lo es el post punk, algo del cual la banda carece, la música contiene elementos de doom metal, motivo por el cual se la clasifica dentro del gothic metal.
