La música gospel, música espiritual o música evangélica, surgió en las iglesias afro americanas en el siglo XVIII. El nombre Mary Mary parece evocar algo espiritual a la vez que alegre y positivo. Y esta es la razón por la que el dúo de hermanas Erica y Tina Atkins eligió Mary Mary como nombre artístico.
La música de Mary Mary, producida por el conocido productor de r&b y hip-hop Warryn Campbell (que ha trabajado en los discos de Brandy, Boyz II Men, Shanice y Dru Hill entre otros), es contemporánea, meticulosa, funky, sorprendente, con mucho soul y profundamente espiritual, pero a la vez tremendamente pegadiza.
