La música alternativa es uno de los estilos musicales más populares a nivel internacional. El rock alternativo fue producido como una alternativa a la música a finales de los 80 y principio de los 90. Siendo en esta última década donde alcanza gran aceptación por parte de los amantes de la música, y esto se debió en gran medida a la colaboración de bandas punk de los años 70 y 80. La baja en popularidad del rock alternativo fue debido a la sobresaturación del mercado causado por los ejecutivos de compañías disqueras quienes solo pensaban en ganar plata.
Hoobastank es una banda de Rock Alternativo de Los Ángeles (Estados Unidos), formada por Doug Robb (vocalista), Dan Estrin (guitarra), Markku Lappalainen (bajista) y Chris Hesse (batería). Robb y Estrin se conocieron en un concurso de grupos de música californiano, el Agoura Hill, en 1994. En ese concurso ambos representaban a su propio instituto y compitieron entre sí, pero finalmente se unieron para formar Hoobastank; poco después se les unirían Lappalainen y Hesse.
En 1998 lanzan su primer álbum They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To bajo el nombre de Hoobustank, que editan ellos mismos, y comienzan una gira por la costa oeste americana. En dicha gira vendieron bastantes discos en los locales donde actuaban, pero el éxito de la banda se debió principalmente a su difusión vía Internet, sobre todo en países como Inglaterra, Israel, Rusia o Brasil.
