La música alternativa es uno de los estilos musicales más populares a nivel internacional. El rock alternativo fue producido como una alternativa a la música a finales de los 80 y principio de los 90. Siendo en esta última década donde alcanza gran aceptación por parte de los amantes de la música, y esto se debió en gran medida a la colaboración de bandas punk de los años 70 y 80. La baja en popularidad del rock alternativo fue debido a la sobresaturación del mercado causado por los ejecutivos de compañías disqueras quienes solo pensaban en ganar plata.
H2O fue concebida en 1994 en la ciudad de Nueva York, por dos amigos de infancia: el vocalista Toby Morse y el guitarrista Rusty Pistachio. Luego se unieron a las filas de la banda el bajista Eric Rice, y el baterista Todd. Meses después del lanzamiento de su disco debut llamado H2O, Eric dejó la banda, y fue reemplazado por Adam Blake.
La banda firmó por el prestigioso sello Epitaph e inmediatamente se puso a trabajar en su segunda producción titulada Thicker Than Water (1997), la cual fue promocionada en presentaciones junto a leyendas como Misfits , Pennywise y The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones.
